TIES OpenOffice ClassesTable of contents
From WwwTIES has recently added some OpenOffice 3 Classes to their training schedule. For the convience of the Linux Community, and TIES, I have copied the class info here. You can see more info about the classes on the TIES Teaching and Learning search page (http://tchlrn.ties.k12.mn.us:81/FMPro?-db=wksp0708.fp5&-format=search.htm&-view=) by searching for "OpenOffice". The Instructor and I are working to have Ubnutu Linux 9.04 as a platform option for these classes. If you are interested in taking a class you can contact: TIES 1667 Snelling Ave. N., St. Paul, MN 55108 Phone: 651-999-6000
#1305WA - OpenOffice 3 Writer for Experienced Word Users 4/1/2009 8:30 - 11:30 Writer - a word processor you can use for anything from writing a quick letter to producing an entire book.
Writer is the word processor component of OpenOffice.org. In addition to the usual features of a word processor (spell checking, thesaurus, autocorrect, find and replace, tables of contents, mail merge, etc.), Writer provides - templates and styles; page-layout tools using frames, columns, and tables; embedding or linking of many kinds of objects; built-in drawing tools; Master documents; change tracking; export to PDF, including bookmarks and so much more.
In this workshop we will explore a useful selection of the tools that are available and compare them to what you are already familiar with in Word. Platform: Macintosh Windows #1310WA - OpenOffice 3 Impress and Draw for PowerPoint Users 4/7/2009 8:30 - 3:30 Impress - the fastest, most powerful way to create effective multimedia presentations. Impress is OpenOffice.org's presentations (slide show) component. You can create slides that contain many different elements, including text, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, charts, clip art, and a wide range of graphic objects. Impress, in common with the other components of OpenOffice.org, has access to the spelling checker and thesaurus and comes with pre-packaged text styles, background styles, and a handy online help. In this workshop we will explore a useful selection of the tools that are available and compare them to what you are already familiar with in PowerPoint. In addition to these functions we will consider the powers that the Draw tool that also comes with OpenOffice brings to the table. This workshop will assume that the attendee is comfortable with quality presentations design concepts and has some basic exposure to presentation development tools and graphic editing tools. Platform: Macintosh Windows
#1315WA - OpenOffice 3 Calc for Experienced Excel Users 4/21/2009 8:30 - 11:30 Calc - a powerful spreadsheet with all the tools you need to calculate, analyse, and present your data in numerical reports or sizzling graphics. Calc is the spreadsheet component of OpenOffice.org. You can enter data, usually numerical data, in a spreadsheet and then manipulate this data to produce certain results. Alternatively you can enter data and then use Calc in a 'What If...' manner by changing some of the data and observing the results without having to retype the entire spreadsheet. As an experienced spreadsheets user you have discovered that a major advantage of electronic spreadsheets is that the data is easier to alter. If the correct functions and formulas have been used, the program will apply these changes automatically. This workshop will assume that you are familiar with the basic functions of a spreadsheet like formulas, cell addressing, absolute vs. relative referencing, functions and In this workshop we will explore a useful selection of the tools that are available and compare them to what you are already familiar with in Excel. Platform: Macintosh Windows #1320WA - OpenOffice 3 Calc + Base for Experienced Excel and Access Users 5/13/2009 8:30 - 3:30 Calc - a powerful spreadsheet with all the tools you need to calculate, analyse, and present your data in numerical reports or sizzling graphics.
Base - lets you manipulate databases seamlessly. Create and modify tables, forms, queries, and reports, all from within OpenOffice.org
Calc-
Calc, the spreadsheet component of OpenOffice.org, allows you to enter data, in a spreadsheet and then manipulate this data to produce certain results. One common use of Spreadsheets is to create simple but usable flat databases - basic lists of information. This is using a spreadsheet as a rudimentary database.
Base-
Base allows us to take the rudimentary database that we started in Calc or any other spreadsheet tool and perform operations and functions that we never dreamed of with a simple flat spreadsheet database. With Base we can create reports and queries of the data that is in the Base software or any number of other tools that allow ODBC or export in formats friendly to Base like MS Access. Base can also act as a front end for a variety of database engines including the Microsoft JET database, MySQL, and PostgreSQL
The Combination-
You can couple the operations of the Calc product with Base to move from flat databases to powerful relational databases.
When used in tandem with Calc, Base can allow you to reorganize, simplify data entry, provide dynamic responses to information requests and provide beautifully formated reports on the content of data files. You can also connect to data in Excel or Calc files directly query and manipulate them without touching the spreadsheet software directly.
In this workshop we will explore a useful selection of the tools that are available and compare them to what you are already familiar with the basic functionalities that one would experience at the intersections between Excel and Access.
This workshop assumes that you know the the basics of using a spreadsheet and that you are at least familiar with the basics of creating a table and doing a basic select query in a relational database tool. If you are not familiar with these concepts this class may NOT be as helpful a learning experience as you may be desiring. Platform: Macintosh Windows #1325WA - OpenOffice 3 Writer and Math for Math and Science Teachers 5/20/2009 8:30 - 11:30 Math - lets you create mathematical equations with a graphic user interface or by directly typing your formulas into the equation editor.
MATH is OpenOffice.org's component for mathematical equations. It is most commonly used as an equation editor for text documents, but it can also be used with other types of documents or stand-alone. When used inside Writer, the equation is treated as an object inside the text document. Similarly, one can also insert these into other OpenOffice.org programs like Calc and Impress. This tool is most effectively employed when you are creating equation rich output for student assessments, course content development and reporting research for academic applications.
In this workshop we will explore a useful selection of the tools that are available and compare them to what you are already familiar with in Equation Editor and Word.
